Spartans to play in first Memorial Football Classic

This fall, all Seattle public high schools will play in the same sports league for the first time in more than 12 years.

SEATTLE -This fall, all Seattle public high schools will play in the same sports league for the first time in more than 12 years.

The Metro League’s historic reunion will be celebrated this weekend at the two-day first-ever Memorial Football Classic tournament at Memorial Stadium in Seattle Center.

The Metro League now consists of Bainbridge, Ballard, Bishop Blanchet, Chief Sealth, Cleveland, Eastside Catholic, Franklin, Garfield, Holy Names Academy, Ingraham, Lakeside, Nathan Hale, O’Dea, Rainier Beach, Roosevelt, Seattle Preparatory and West Seattle.

More than 7,000 spectators are expected throughout both days of the event, beginning Friday, Sept. 12, which boasts five football games total which will include all three of the schools rejoining the league: Garfield, Roosevelt and Ballard.

The event is hosted by Seattle City Council member Bruce Harrell, a Garfield High alumni and former member of the National Academic All-American First Team in football.

Tickets are on sale now, the cost is $5 per day for students and $10 per day for adults. $15 is the cost of a special two-day pass.

Saturday, Sept. 13

6 p.m. – Garfield vs. Franklin
