Bainbridge swim coach has cancer, will step down

Kaycee Taylor, the athletic director for Bainbridge High and the coach of the boys swimming and diving team, has cancer.

Kaycee Taylor, the athletic director for Bainbridge High and the coach of the boys swimming and diving team, has cancer.

Taylor said Tuesday he was diagnosed with cancer two weeks ago and he notified the swim team of his health last week. Other staff members at Bainbridge High and his large circle of colleagues in the educational and athletic communities were told this week.

Greg Colby, an assistant coach for the boys swim team and longtime coach of the BHS girls swim team, will take over as coach for the boys squad, Taylor said.

Taylor noted his cancer is “very treatable” and added that he has “some really great people taking over.”

“The plan is in place to have Greg Colby step up as coach. He’s already agreed to do that,” Taylor said.

Patti Peterson, an assistant coach for the girls swim team, will help out as assistant coach for the boys team.

Taylor, 44, said he will continue to work at Bainbridge High as his condition will allow.

His treatment is scheduled to start during Christmas break, he said.

Taylor, who taught social studies at BHS, will continue as athletic director and said people will still see him at school, games and meetings unless he has a medical appointment or needs rest.
