The Spartans’ best chance for another win in varsity prep football comes tonight as Bainbridge travels to Seattle to face the winless Evergreen Wolverines.
Bainbridge (1-4 conference, 1-6 overall) is looking to snap a three-game losing streak that started with their 21-19 defeat against Lakeside on Oct. 2 at Memorial Stadium.
Tonight’s game is homecoming for the Wolverines, but there hasn’t been much to celebrate this season for Evergreen fans. The team is currently 0-7 overall (0-5 in Seamount play), and has been winless at home (0-3) and on the road (0-4).
There’s been some pretty big blowouts this season for Evergreen: 34-0 against Highline; 52-0 against Renton; and 52-0 against Hazen.
The biggest heartbreak this season goes well beyond any score, however. The Wolverines are reeling from the death of a football player from on-field injuries that happened during an Oct. 2 game against Highline.
Kenney Bui, 17, a senior wide receiver and defensive back, died three days after sustaining a severe head injury in the fourth quarter of the Highline game.
(The Wolverines have lost their last two games by forfeits, last week against Kennedy Catholic, and the week before, against Lindbergh.)
Tonight will be the Wolverines’ last time to take the field this season: Next week’s matchup against Foster has been canceled.
Spartan fans will gather after school to ride a rally bus to the game tonight — BHS students are also making a banner offering condolences to the Evergreen gridders in remembrance of Bui — and kickoff for the non-conference matchup is 7 p.m.
