More slime bags found on Bainbridge Island

Bainbridge Island’s slime-bag mystery has gotten worse — and smellier.

City spokeswoman Kellie Stickney said another bag filled with the unidentifiable goo — which has been described as an oily, soupy substance that once may have been food — was found outside Bainbridge Island City Hall Wednesday morning.

Stickney said a green plastic produce bag “filled with something gross” was found in the plaza next to city hall atop a garbage can. Officials believe it was left outside city hall sometime between 5:30 and 7:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials asked for the public’s help earlier this week after residents and city workers started reporting plastic bags filled with the nasty liquid had been left atop garbage bins throughout Winslow over the past few weeks. Birds and raccoons have been ripping the bags open, spilling the greasy contents all over the garbage cans and ground.

Stickney said the bag found Wednesday had not yet been pulled apart by wildlife.

“We discovered it because we heard the crows,” she said.

The city said the dumping problem is actually worse than previously thought.

“There have been dozens of incidents,” Stickney said, which is double the amount or more than reported earlier.

Five bags were also found in one day, she said.

The bags have been discovered in the playground at Waterfront Park, at city hall and downtown Winslow. One bag was also found over the weekend at Red Pine Park.

The most common dumping spot has been on the garbage containers outside Blackbird Bakery on Winslow Way.

Stickney said the city hopes to get the public’s help in stopping the dumping, and residents who see suspicious activity should call authorities. The bags pose a health threat, she said, and are also a hazard to wildlife and water quality.

The contents of the bags have been described as a rancid food product.

“The substance has a real foul smell to it,” Stickney said.

The stinky sludge is being found in green plastic produce bags, the kind used at local grocery stores for organic produce.

There’s no indication why the bags have been left on top of downtown garbage cans. City officials don’t know if someone is intentionally leaving the bags out for animals, or for some other reason.
