ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Fourteen members of the Bainbridge Island Rope Skipping team recently returned from the Fraser Valley Classic Speed and Power Tournament with a dozen first-place wins.

The tournament was held Nov. 9 in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The Bainbridge team, coached by Julie Ahrnes, competed in single rope and double dutch speed and power events against all Canadian teams in the opening tournament to kick off the competition season.

The Bainbridge jumpers performed surprisingly well in the power events, which are not included in U.S.A. Jump Rope competitions. In power events, the rope spins around twice under each jump, known as a “double under.” The girls swept the Double Dutch single power event, earning first-place ribbons in each age category.

Also, the team brought home blue ribbons in seven of the eight competition events.

Three new “rookie” jumpers travelled with the team to British Columbia to jump in their first competition: Imani Maher, Grace Maher and Zelie Wynne-Jones, who also placed in the top finishers in several events in the rookie category.

Veteran jumper Abigail Harrison earned first-place ribbons in 30 second and 1 minute single rope speed, and scored a personal best of 314 jumps in one minute.

In Double Dutch, the pairs power team of Serena Johnson, Sarah Sharman, Anna Warga and Abigail Harrison placed first with their top recorded score of 714 jumps in two minutes.
