Spartans meet and beat goal in gymnastics

BAINBRIDGE - Sarah Rice won all five events as Bainbridge earned its second win in gymnastics in the Friday the 13th meet at home.

BAINBRIDGE – Sarah Rice won all five events as Bainbridge earned its second win in gymnastics in the Friday the 13th meet at home.

Rice placed first in the floor exercise, vault, bars and beam – where she scored 9.15 – and was the all around winner.

Bainbridge won with 146.15, followed by Shorewood in second (133.85) and Shorecrest in third (122.1).

The Spartans boosted their score by more than 11 points over their showing in the season opener against West Seattle and Chief Sealth.

“I thought the meet went really well,” said Spartan Coach Cindy Guy. “We had set a goal of 140, which was five points higher than the previous week, and we just exceeded it.”

“The girls were really happy with their efforts,” she said.

Bainbridge’s points on beam also bumped up by 3.5 points.

“And they achieved their goals of having six stick beam routines,” the coach added.

By contrast, in the first meet, the Spartans had only one.

“It was a great improvement,” Guy said. “You can really gain ground when you stay on the beam.”

“So that really made a difference and, of course, having our own floor really helped us out,” Guy said.

Two new gymnasts competed for the first time for the Spartans and scored in the Dec. 13 matchup: Maddy Mikami and Sydney Dalessi.

New, also, were the harder skills added to Rice’s floor routine, and Miller Shor’s beam routine.

“We tweaked a couple little things in Miller’s beam that worked out well,” Guy noted.

Shor placed second in the beam with a score of 8.0. on the floor exercise, Rice finished in the top spot with 8.8 while Shor was right behind in 8.7.

The closest competition came in the vault, with two ties for third and fifth.

Rice was first for Bainbridge with a score of 8.35, while teammate Mila Lesh was second with 8.25

Shor and fellow Spartan Diana Catinas tied at third with 8.15. In fifth place, Bainbridge’s Juliana Hinkley drew even with Giorgia Bornelli with a score of 8.05. Bainbridge competes at home again on Friday, Dec. 20 against Mercer Island and Bellingham. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
