Bainbridge Island jeweler finds new inspiration through the challenge of competition

How one local designer stays inspired while creating the next generation of family heirlooms

For one award-winning Bainbridge Island jeweler, inspiration often comes from the stunning gemstones and materials she works with, as well as from competing on the national and international stages.

“When I’m working on new designs I try to find inspiration in the individual pearls and gemstones themselves. I’ve also found competing against the best of the best in the jewelry world really pushes me to dig deep and try things that have never been done before,” says Robin Callahan, of Robin Callahan Designs.

Callahan’s work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, with her list of awards growing longer every year. Most recently, she won her first CPAA (Cultured Pearl Association of America) Visionary award, in recognition of giving fresh, new design to traditional pearls, as well as the Retailers’ Choice Award and second place in ‘pearls over $5,000’ from the InStore Design Awards.

Additionally, she’s been awarded Best Jeweler in the ‘Best of Bainbridge’ for the seventh year in a row, Best Jeweler in the ‘Best of Kitsap’ for the fourth year in a row, and her second Spectrum Award this time winning the Diva Award in the men’s jewelry category.

“Sending jewelry pieces out into the world to compete against other high-end, well-known designers is both thrilling and intimidating,” Callahan says. “But it also opens up a well of creativity. That competitive edge to be the best of the best becomes a driving force behind your work and an incentive to really think outside the box and design something that is essentially a part of your heart and soul.”

Custom creations create lasting memories

Along with the gemstones themselves and her competitive spirit, Callahan finds working on custom client commissions can also help her explore uncharted waters within her work.

“I love getting to know my clients and being part of the journey from the first conversation to the final hug goodbye,” Callahan says. “Creating deeply personal jewelry pieces for them that are destined to become the next generation’s cherished family heirlooms is always an incredible and inspiring experience.”
