Baroque to faceted the opportunities are endless when it comes to pearls

Bainbridge jeweler finds inspiration from the gems themselves

Bainbridge Island jeweler Robin Callahan of Robin Callahan Designs is making waves both nationally and internationally thanks to her unique approach to fine jewelry design, letting the pearls themselves inspire the artwork they’re turned into.

“When I’m coming up with new designs I try to find inspiration in the individual pearls and gemstones themselves,” Callahan says. “I start with the raw materials and let them take the lead in the creative process. One of my more recent pieces, ‘Laelynn’ is the perfect example – I found this incredible Fireball Freshwater Pearl at the Tucson Gem Show and I knew instantly, it was meant to be a floral piece.”

Pearls have been Callahan’s most recent obsession, citing the versatility of these beautiful gems as fuelling her creativity over the past few years.

“Pearls in general just have so much to offer and are in high demand in the jewelry world at the moment,” Callahan says. “What I find so fascinating and inspiring about pearls is how diverse they are. I can create everything from Baroque- and Art Deco-style pieces, to unstated or more modern pieces, the opportunities are truly endless when it comes to pearls.”

One of Robin’s more recent faceted pearl pieces (The Hageshi Cufflinks) won an AGTA Spectrum award in the WJA Diva Award for Men’s Jewelry category this year and she’s currently working on some unique submissions for the International Cultured Pearl Association competition as she continues to chase her new found love of all things pearl.

“Sending jewelry pieces out into the world to compete against other high-end, well-known designers is always a thrilling, if not intimidating, experience but it also opens up a well of creativity. That competitive edge to be the best of the best becomes a driving force behind your work and incentive to really think outside the box and design something that is essentially a part of your heart and soul.”
