New parks trail along the harbor is fantastic | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor: When our family moved to Bainbridge Island more than 10 years ago, one of the reasons we decided to purchase a house here was the expansive open space and park system on the Island. Since arriving here, the Bainbridge Island park district, working in partnership with nonprofit agencies such as the Bainbridge Island Land Trust and the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation, has added several new parks, open spaces and trails to the system.

When our family moved to Bainbridge Island more than 10 years ago, one of the reasons we decided to purchase a house here was the expansive open space and park system on the Island. Since arriving here, the Bainbridge Island park district, working in partnership with nonprofit agencies such as the Bainbridge Island Land Trust and the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation, has added several new parks, open spaces and trails to the system. I truly believe that the parks and trails on Bainbridge Island are a significant part of what makes living on the island so great.

Recently, while running between the Blakely Cemetery Trail, which is a very steep 1/3-mile trail down to Blakely Harbor Park and the nearby trail extending from Blakely Harbor to Fort Ward Park, I noticed a new trail being built in Blakely Harbor Park.

This new trail extends from NE Country Club Road to the pond and the dam area at the south side of Blakely Harbor. The winding path of wood chips is carved through Himalayan and evergreen blackberry and leads to the dam where there are beautiful views of the harbor area in all directions. This new path provides a great addition to the plentiful open space areas in the south end of the island.
