BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge Spartans opened the girls swimming season last week the hard way — by hosting state 4A champs Newport and state 3A champs Mercer Island in a dual meet at the Bainbridge Aquatics Center.
Against the Knights, the Spartans finished with 114 points to Newport’s 72.
Mercer Island, however, prevailed with 100 points over Bainbridge’s 86.
The Spartans fared best in 1-meter diving, where Zora Opalka placed first with a final score of 227.75.
Teammate and fellow sophomore Cammie Rouser was second with 188.90 points.
Bainbridge also performed well in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Mercer Island was first in a state-qualifying time of 1:45.69.
The Bainbridge team — Ani Duni, Sam Caro, Amanda Comeau, Mikelle Ackerley — finished second in 1:47.15, just below the state mark of 1:45.99.
