Lakeside’s dominance over Bainbridge Island continued Saturday afternoon when the Lions won their fifth consecutive Girls Division 1 State Lacrosse Championship with a 15-10 victory over the Spartans.

Sarah Pollnow scored seven goals to lead the Lions to the win at Eastside Catholic in Sammamish, while Jaclyn Biggers, Sydney Whitaker and Bea Sheffer each scored three goals for the Spartans.

Lakeside, which finished the season with a 16-0 record, defeated the Spartans in overtime to win the title in 2009.

The Lions used a swarming defense to take a 7-3 lead at the end of the first half and never let Bainbridge get closer than three goals in the second half.

Bainbridge lost its first and last game of the season to Lakeside, finishing 14-2. The Spartans had advanced to the finals with impressive 20-5 and 17-4 wins over Tacoma and Bellevue, respectively.

“We prepared very well for Lakeside and especially for Pollnow – but a lot of nerves showed up today,” said Bainbridge coach Tami Tommila, whose squad had seven sophomores and just three seniors compared with the well-seasoned Lakeside’s roster. “(Lakeside) is a very good team. They have great tradition with their program.”
