Island gymnasts excel at state meet

Five gymnasts from the Bainbridge Island Gymnastics Club earned high scores and repeatedly placed in the top 10 at the recent Optional State Championships held at Edmonds Community College.

Five gymnasts from the Bainbridge Island Gymnastics Club earned high scores and repeatedly placed in the top 10 at the recent Optional State Championships held at Edmonds Community College.

Level 8 gymnast Sarah Rice again paced the team with an all-around score of 36.1, which earned her sixth place in the competition.

Rice scored 9.325 on vault, 8.625 on bars, 9.2 on beam and 8.95 on floor. Her vault score gave her second place in that event in her age bracket (15+) and 10th place out of all 140 level 8 competitors.

Level 8 gymnast Chloe Seferos also made a strong showing in the age 13 division with 9.025 on vault (second), 7.65 on bars, 9.125 on beam (fourth), 8.925 on floor, for an all-around score of 34.775 (10th).

Rice and Seferos qualified for the regional meet in Beaverton, Ore. against the top level 8 competitors from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii.

Three level 7 gymnasts also scored well.

Age 14+ division gymnast Mariell Summers placed fifth in the all-around competition with a score of 34.875, including 8.775 on vault, 8.675 on bars (third), 8.5 on beam and 8.925 on floor.

Teammate Miller Shor tallied 31.725 in the all-around competition, while age 11 division gymnast Jianna Kaufman posted an all-around score of 32.0.
