Hoberg sworn in as new school board member

Mary Ellen “Mev” Hoberg took the oath of office at Wednesday’s Bainbridge Island School Board meeting for her new position as the District 3 director.

The school board had earlier appointed Hoberg to the vacant board seat.

“It was just an outstanding selection,” District Superintendent Faith Chapel said Wednesday of the board’s choice.

Hoberg has been a classroom volunteer for the past several years, and has been serving as the vice president of the Parent Teacher Organization Coordinating Council. Her children, Maggie and Charlie, attend Eagle Harbor High School and Sonoji Sakai Intermediate School respectively. They were in the audience watching as their mother raised her right hand and was sworn in to the post.

“They are the reasons I am involved in schools,” Hoberg said.

Five candidates had applied for the position, which was left vacant by the resignation of John Tawresey in early March.

Hoberg will serve until the next regularly scheduled board election in November 2013.
