Gear Grinders plan ‘Mountain Bike Movie Night’ fundraiser

The Bainbridge Island Mountain Bike Club is presenting “Mountain Bike Movie Night,” a fundraiser for the Gear Grinders high school and middle school mountain bike racing team at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at Island Center Hall.

BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge Island Mountain Bike Club is presenting “Mountain Bike Movie Night,” a fundraiser for the Gear Grinders high school and middle school mountain bike racing team at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at Island Center Hall.

The event will include Teton Gravity Research’s wild and surreal downhill mountain bike film “unReal” and Tom Clune’s  presentation of his adventure ride from Canada to Mexico, “The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

for food and drinks, silent auction bidding, live music and lots of raffle prizes. Tickets are available at Classic Cycle and BI Cycle and at the Chilly Hilly ride on Feb. 28.

The team is raising funds for equipment, race day travel expenses and for future construction of a mountain bike pump track and trail on Bainbridge Island.

The Gear Grinders are co-ed middle school and high school level mountain bike teams open to students at Bainbridge Island middle and high schools.  The Gear Grinders focus on skills development, fitness, strength and endurance through a variety of drills and ride locations. The team began training this year in January and has three training rides every week, plus indoor spin classes during the winter months.

They will participate in four races across Washington state this year, on April 3, 17 and May 1 and 15, in locations such as Cle Elum, Spokane and Steilacum.

The 34 member team is part of the Washington State Student Cycling League, which promotes the sport of youth cross-country riding, both competitive and recreational, and organizes races and other events for the 23 mountain bike teams in Washington.
