Robert M. Snellman

Robert M. Snellman

November 9, 1921 – October 3, 2010

Robert M. Snellman passed away peacefully Oct 3, 2010.  He was laid to rest Oct 7, 2010 at Blakely Cemetery, Bainbridge Island, Washington

Robert “Bob” Snellman epitomized the Finnish concept “Sisu”.  He possessed strength of will that sustained a personal integrity and courage through a life of hardship, war, hard work and success.  He had the ability to laugh at disaster, and to see through to the end what needed to be done.

Robert was the son of Finnish dissidents who fled to the Northwest to escape Russian tyranny.  He was the descendant of Johann Vilhelm Snellman credited with modernizing the Finnish language.

Watching his single mother practice “Sisu”, Bob learned the value of hard work.  He grew into a tough outdoorsman.  Bob became an avid reader who collected antique and first edition books.

Robert enlisted in the Washington National Guard in 1939.  He was re-assigned to the 461st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in 1942. His unit fought with the Army V Corps and the Fighting 69th Infantry Division through the major battles of Europe.

Following World War II  Robert attended the UW where he graduated with a degree in business.  His passion for business, shrewd yet ethical dealings and meticulous record keeping eventually led to financial success.  He continued his lifelong philanthropy by supporting the Arts and Education in his beloved city of Seattle.  For many years he and his wife Barbara were important patrons of the Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera.  They also supported local libraries, theater, community music programs and friends and family in need.

During Barbara’s decline, Bob was her constant companion and aid.  Her passing in February 2010 left him bereft.  He missed her with his heart and soul, and longed for the day he would be reunited with his love.

Robert is survived by his beloved children and grandchildren:  Eric, Janni and Ryan; Heidi, Natascha and Ruben; John, Jenny and Cassidy; Robin, Patrick, Laura, Sean and Nora; Hollace, Michael, Kevin, Greg, Pete and Matt.

Remembrances in Robert’s name may be made to a school reading program of choice. For a detailed obituary please visit: www.cookfamilyfuneralhome.com.
