Gloria Lund

Gloria Johnson Lund, formerly of Bainbridge Island, died on April 18. She was 77.

She was born on March 3, 1931 and raised in Sidney, Mont., the daughter of George and Esther Johnson, founders of Johnson Hardware.

She graduated from Sidney High in 1949 and attended Colorado Women’s College and the University of Washington, from which she graduated in 1953.

In September 1952, she married Dean Lund, also of Sidney. The couple lived in Seattle and in Kodiak, Alaska, where they were stationed in the U.S. Navy.

From there, they went to Boulder, Colo., for 21 years before moving to Durango, Colo.

While in Colorado she was active in the Democratic Party, also working actively in peace organizations during the Vietnam War, and on human rights projects.

After teaching at Colorado Timberline Academy for three years, the couple moved to Seattle, finally settling on Bainbridge Island.

With Gracie Close, she helped found the Pacific Peace Fund, which made grants to grassroots groups working for peace and justice in the western United States. She also expanded and enriched her life long artistic talent while there.

In 2004, the couple separated. Gloria moved to Monmouth, Ore. in 2007.

Wherever she was, she had many friends and admirers. She treasured compassion and honesty above all other values, scrupulously avoiding hurting anyone. She loved all of nature from the desert canyons of the southwest to the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William.

She is survived by her husband and by two daughters, Karla Lund of Oakland, Calif., and Rui Lund of Corvallis, Ore. She is also survived by grandsons Angelo Tatesure and Bryce Hinkle; sister Dorothy Storer of Williamsburg, Va; and a brother, Bruce, of Atlanta, Ga. as well as in-laws, nephews and nieces.
