YSC honored for Earth Day
The Bainbridge High School Youth Service Corps was recognized with a Kitsap County Earth Day Award for its involvement in school and community recycling efforts.
The group, which received an award for youth environmental leadership from Kitsap County Commissioners on Monday in Port Orchard, helped recycle construction waste from the school’s new cafeteria and convinced the school administration to convert the waste into reusable lunch trays.
Kitsap County Public Works honored 14 individuals, groups or businesses in Kitsap County with an award this year, though the Youth Service Corps was the only organization based on Bainbridge.
Last year, Don Palmer of Bainbridge Disposal was posthumously given a Lifetime Achievement Award for adding recycling services to the normal array of services offered by a hauling company.
Also in the 2007 Earth Day Awards, Voyager Montessori Elementary School received the Outstanding Achievement Award in Environmental Education.

Hooray, whee, KiDiMu’s three
KiDiMu, Bainbridge Island’s children’s museum, will celebrate its third year on April 19, ringing in its new year with performances, art project opportunities, and new exhibits.
The museum, which offers classes with local artists, special programs in conjunction with other non-profits, and concerts for kids, is popular with kids and parents looking for what KiDiMu calls “connections to our local and global communities.”
On the day of the anniversary, KiDiMu will offer a family-friendly concert by Nancy Cassidy and Dayan Kai, children’s folk singers from California. Cassidy’s five children’s albums have sold over 2 million copies around the world.
The following day, the museum will host an artist from Seattle drama company Moonpaper Tent. Kids will be able to learn about nature and play with dress-up and puppet materials.
Also on the anniversary weekend, young artists will able to plunge into their own “art studio,” working with face paints, foam dough, finger-painting, and more.
Ongoing exhibits and activities, which will be open throughout May, include the current exhibit “Take Flight” along with the “Thomas the Tank Engine” area for toddler play as well as the lower level’s GardenTopia, a show exposing children to math and reading through theater.
Looking ahead to the warmer months, the Blue Man Group exhibit, traveling from the Boston Children’s Museum, will stop on Bainbridge as part of its national tour.
KiDiMu Executive Director Art Burke says this exhibit, with its 1,500 square feet devoted to an exploration of sound and light, “blows everything else we’ve ever had out of the water.”

Dock work rescheduled
The road and ramp leading to the public dock at Waterfront Park were suppose to have closed Monday, April 14 for repairs.
Those repairs were delayed by a week, and dock access will instead be closed next Monday, April 21.
Portions of the dock may also be closed for short periods through May 24 as Bainbridge Public Works repairs pile hoops and sleepers along with plumbing and electrical systems.
Moorage and dinghy access will still be available.

Land a big fish at the derby
Young island anglers can test their skills at the Sportsmen’s Club’s annual Fishing Derby, to be held at 9 a.m. April 26 at the Irving S. Miller Memorial Pond.
The derby is free and is open to anglers 14 and under. Participants must use a pole and line only – no reels are allowed. Comfortable sturdy shoes or rubber boots are advised, as are chairs, water and snacks.
The event has been an island tradition for several decades. The opening of fishing season at the club’s pond – on Sportsman Club Road – happens every year on the last Saturday in April.
