Waterfront Park pedestrian bridge to reopen next month

The Waterfront Park footbridge should be reopened by late January.

The Waterfront Park footbridge is scheduled to be reopened by late January.

According to the city’s public works department, repairs began this week on the pedestrian bridge that links Waterfront trail to the ferry’s drive-on entrance and Harborview Drive.

While the bridge has been closed since September due to a faulty structure, city officials anticipate reopening access by late January.

Over the past few months the city received approval for the project from the Department of the Army, Corps of Engineers and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The city hired Sealevel Bulkhead Builders, Inc. to complete the repairs.

Residents can expect construction from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, though construction crews may work as late as 10 p.m. In an effort to complete the project as soon as possible, the city has authorized the company to work during low tides.

Despite this, public works officials said the work complies with the city’s noise ordinance since the project is located in a commercial, mixed-use zone and 300 feet away from residential properties.
