POW to visit Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island

The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island will host Dr. William Reeder, the last U.S. Army prisoner captured during the Vietnam War, for a special presentation at Wing Point Golf & Country Club at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7.

He will discuss his harrowing experiences as well as his book, “Through the Valley: My Captivity in Vietnam.”

Several months into his second tour, while providing support to forces at the besieged base of Ben Het, Reeder’s chopper went down in a flaming wreck. He survived the crash only to be captured after evading the enemy for three days.

He will discuss the conditions of his captivity, being held in jungle cages for weeks before enduring a grueling forced march of several hundred miles on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, costing the lives of seven other POWs in his small group of 27.

He will also highlight his reintegration after release and cover many lessons that remain relevant today for U.S. forces facing combat in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria.

The presentation is open to the public. The cost is attend is $20 per person, which includes a meal.
