Most popular baby names in Washington: Sophia and Mason

It was a step up for the Masons of the state.

In 2010, Mason was number 11 on the list of most popular names for baby boys.

Liam, 2010’s number eight in popularity for baby boys, jumped to second place on the new list.

For girls born last year, Sophia was ranked number one and Olivia was number two.

Nationwide, Jacob was the most popular name for baby boys in 2011, and Isabella topped the list for baby girls.

According to the state Department of Health, a total of  86,929 babies were born in Washington in 2011; 42,325 girls and 44,604 boys.

The largest number of births was among mothers 25 to 29 years old. Teen pregnancies and births (for mothers 15 to 17 years old) continue to drop, officials also noted.

The Department of Health reported the most popular names Thursday. The information was complied from official birth certificates.
