The Bainbridge Island man arrested Friday for allegedly trying to murder his wife will appear in Kitsap County Superior Court on June 18 on a charge of second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Kevin Michael Hardee, 29, was arrested June 15 after police say he tried to suffocate his wife.

Bainbridge officials said police responded to a 911 call at a Bainbridge Island home at 8:40 a.m. Friday and entered the residence through an open door. Officers found a man sitting at his kitchen table, and authorities said he had just put his hands over his wife’s mouth and nose and said “that he wanted to end it.”

Police found the man’s wife in their bedroom. The 35-year-old woman said she was sleeping but she woke up when she couldn’t breath. She told police her face had been covered with plastic wrap and it was being held in place by her husband.

The couple struggled, and the woman fell to the floor and was able to get the plastic off her face. She then said her husband climbed on top of her while she was on the floor and continued to try to suffocate her with his hands.

Authorities said the woman told officers she was almost going to pass out when her husband suddenly left the bedroom. The woman locked the bedroom door, then dialed 911 for help.

Officials said the woman was evaluated by the Bainbridge Island Fire Department and was later treated at a local medical center and is now recovering.

Hardee was booked into the Kitsap County Jail Friday and is being held on $1 million bail.
