To the editor:

Bainbridge Island citizens are trying something new: a community-based police advisory committee.

Being aware that there has been a growing feeling of disconnect between our community and our police force, a group of citizens has come together to try to heal the breach. We want to feel as good about our police as we do about our firefighters and emergency medical technicians.

The goal of this group is to provide an active channel of communication between citizens, teens and parents, city administration and police. We hope to make this a two-way channel so that feelings and concerns otherwise left to fester will instead be communicated and awareness of them raised.

Anyone interested in observing, providing input to, or joining, the advisory group is encouraged to attend our meetings.

Dates of upcoming meetings, along with previous meeting’s minutes, are posted on the Islanders for Collaborative Policing blog: www.collpol.blogspot.com.

We intend this to be a community effort, positive in approach and constructive in result.
