A Community Survey is available to take on Bainbridge Island through Aug. 26.

A city notice says it’s a fast way for residents to give input and remain anonymous. City leaders hope to hear from a wider variety of residents using this method of gathering information.

Those perspectives are important in determining values of community members, the notice says.

To take the survey go to //polco.us/n/res/vote/bainbridge-island-wa/the-city-of-bainbridge-2?pn-method=open.

Superfund cleanup

A cleanup is going on at the former Wyckoff wood-treatment facility, located at the mouth of Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island.

This summer and fall, vegetation clearing, geophysical surveying, air and noise monitoring, sub-surface drilling, test pitting, and infiltration testing will occur. Work will be overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and most of it will occur inside the fenced area.

Work outside that area will be done Aug. 23-24. Drilling that will inform seismic design requirements in the beach adjacent to the western sheet pile wall will take place. The beach will remain open to the public with limited access restrictions.

On Sept. 8, a drone will be used to collect aerial imagery and/or topographic survey data of the former processing area and beaches. The beach will remain open to the public.

Guatemala coffee

Pegasus Coffee Co. is hosting coffee farmers from Cooperativa La Asunción, San Jose Poaquil, Guatemala, at The Pegasus Coffee House on Bainbridge Island for a free “Meet the Coffee Farmers” event Aug. 19 from noon to 2 p.m.

Cooperativa La Asunción is a 30-plus-member farming cooperative dedicated to producing high-altitude coffees of excellent quality. The cooperative represents a group of rural farmers, each of whom owns and works their own small plot of land in the Chimaltenango region.

The Guatemalan farmers will be giving this special presentation and Q&A session for the public, and attendees will be able to meet and interact with the farmers, taste a sampling of their coffee, and learn about the complex journey from farm to cup.

Pegasus Coffee hopes that the event will help bring awareness of the importance of direct-trade and sustainable coffee farming practices.
