The Bainbridge Island Post Office in Winslow had its blue drop-box on Bjune Drive broken into and its contents removed sometime between 3:15 p.m. Saturday and 5 a.m. Monday morning when  a postal employee arrived to empty the box.

Police Cmdr. Sue Shultz said the suspect(s) pried open the back door of the box, which has a front opening that’s large enough for small boxes.

She encourages people who placed items in the box during that time to take measures to secure their accounts in case envelopes or packages placed in it contained confidential information, including credit card bills, statements and tax information.

Shultz said she understood that other drop boxes in the county were broken into as well, but she had no specific information. She said she had no report of the Rollingbay Post Office being victimized over the weekend.

Claims can be filed at the Bainbridge Island Post Office between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Forms are available as well as other information on filing a claim; call 855-9571 for more information.

Shultz said that residents who find any discarded letters or other mail that appears to have been dumped should contact the Police Department at 842-5211
