Busy holiday weekend for emergency crews

Bainbridge Island emergency responders were kept busy as the first snowfall of the year hit the island over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The island was dusted with a smattering of snow, and the accompanying freeze resulted in downed trees and power lines across Bainbridge.

In the 24-hour period of Nov. 29, the Bainbridge Island Fire Department had triple the amount of calls it usually sees.

Even so, it wasn’t as bad as the rest of Kitsap County. Bainbridge Island seemed to dodge the worst of the weather.

“The brunt of the weather seems to have missed us,” said Bainbridge Island Assistant Fire Chief Luke Carpenter. “Just listening to the radio that day I could tell the rest of the county was getting hammered.”

“We had 23 calls,” Carpenter said. “It’s a lot for us. But it’s a lot less than what the rest of the county had.”

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, by comparison, had approximately 60 or so calls, he said.

There were multiple reports of wires down, the regular slate of EMS calls, plus false alarms and a few accidents.
