Bainbridge workshop looks at aging without kids

Liz Taylor will present a workshop of urgent concern to many boomers: “Who’s Got Your Back? Growing Older Without Kids” at an upcoming workshop later this month in Winslow.

Taylor, a longtime resident and expert on aging, will give the talk at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13 at Waterfront Park Community Center.

The workshop is sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District and Bailey Manor Adult Family Home as part of their Power Hour Lecture Series.

Organizers note the workshop had sold out each time it’s been presented in Seattle.

Adult children and spouses are sometimes considered an “insurance policy” in old age; people who can step in and find the right services when loved ones become frail. Or will they?

Around 25 percent of the boomers never had kids – the largest childless population in American history. Many have no spouse. Those who do may find their kids aren’t able or capable to help: many live far away (the people who care about you must be nearby), may show little interest or have issues that make them unable to unwilling to be there when needed.

So what to do? While the lecture won’t offer a magic formula, organizers said it will help audiences think about the issues in new ways and get them on a path to find their own answers.

Taylor has worked in the aging field for more than 35 years, helping families find the right care and housing resources for their aging parents. She wrote a column on aging for the Seattle Times and through her island business, Aging Deliberately, she has advocated that people plan for their aging.

The cost is $10 per person and advance registration is required; call 206-780-8085 or email lizt@agingdeliberately.com to register.
