Bainbridge woman jailed for DUI

A 61-year-old Bainbridge Island woman was charged with driving under the influence in Kitsap County District Court Tuesday after she was allegedly found staggering around a Highway 305 gas station after pulling off the highway Monday afternoon.

The woman was first reported by another driver on Highway 305 who had been behind the woman’s Honda SUV as it traveled south toward the island from Poulsbo. The witness said the woman had been driving erratically, at times under the speed limit, braking suddenly and weaving on the roadway.

The witness also said the other driver went over the curb while pulling into the Masi Shop on Highway 305, and hit a Kitsap Transit bus sign on the way in.

The woman was then seen staggering around the inside of the Masi Shop.

A sheriff’s deputy found the woman’s car at one of the gas pumps, with fresh damage to the car’s front end fender and trim, just before 4 p.m. Monday.

The driver told police she did not have anything to drink, but had taken prescription medicine at about 9 a.m. that day, which had made her drowsy. The woman failed field sobriety tests but a subsequent breath test read zero and detected no levels of alcohol.

The driver was then arrested for DUI. Her vehicle was impounded by Kitsap Towing and a judge granted a warrant over the phone for a blood draw to be taken.

After a blood sample was obtained at the Suquamish Police Department, the woman was taken to Kitsap County Jail and booked. Bail was set at $5,000.
