Bainbridge Island voters overwhelming approved two levies to pay for educational programs and operations and technology improvements for island schools during Tuesday’s Special Election.

According to the initial vote count on Election Night, voters approved the Bainbridge Island School District’s Educational Programs and Operations Levy with a 75.4 percent “yes” vote. Approximately 24.6 percent of Bainbridge voters cast ballots against the measure.

The district’s Technology Levy was approved with a 71.7 percent “yes” vote. The tech levy was rejected by 28.3 percent of Bainbridge voters.

The vote count for the educational levy was 5,583 to 1,820 . The tally for the tech levy was 5,306 to 2,090.

Both levies, combined with already-approved existing bonds for schools, will raise the total levy rate in 2015 to $3.65 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

District officials said the measures will mean an approximate $7 per month increase in property taxes for the owner of a median-priced home valued at $455,000.

The pair of three-year levies, which replace existing levies for educational programs and operations and technology that expire at the end of this year, both required majority approval from voters.
