A 20-year-old Bainbridge Island man was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance after police allegedly found a pound of marijuana in a 2003 Jaguar that was left abandoned near South Beach.

Christopher Martin Bell Jr. was charged with felony possession of marijuana in Kitsap County District Court on Friday, July 25.

According to a statement of probable cause, police were called to an abandoned 2003 Jaguar that had been left in the middle of the road and was blocking a private driveway on South Beach Drive on June 22.

While police were getting the vehicle ready to be impounded, an officer found an unzipped pack on the front seat that contained a wallet with a driver’s license and credit cards.

Also in the pack was an estimated pound of marijuana.

Later that day, police said that a “Mr. Bell” called 911 and asked to talk to a Bainbridge officer. When told his wallet had been taken from the impounded car, Bell allegedly asked, “Do you have my backpack, too?”

When the officer said he did, Bell “sounded relieved and stated, ‘good.'”

Bell said he would come by the police station to retrieve his wallet, and when he did, he also asked if he could get his backpack.

When Bell allegedly arrived at the station, an officer asked him what he knew about the marijuana inside the pack.

“Mr. Bell asked me if ‘his friend’ could pick up the marijuana if he provided medical marijuana authorization to have ‘that much’ marijuana,” the officer noted in court documents.

Bell declined to identify his friend to officers.

Bell later returned to the police station on June 27 and again asked for his backpack, and said it contained “his medical marijuana.” He also said he had a prescription, but did not have any proof.

Police said the marijuana had a total weight of 14.86 ounces, and noted that Bell was not of the legal age to possess recreational marijuana. Police also said the amount of marijuana “was far in excess of the amount authorized for recreational uses.”

Bell was arrested and booked into Kitsap County Jail late last week and bail was set at $5,000.

His next scheduled court appearance is July 29.
