Bainbridge Island briefs

Project to begin

Work on the New Brooklyn/Sportsman Club intersection improvement project will begin June 22.

To avoid impacts during the school year, the contractor needs the entire summer to accomplish the reconfiguration of lanes, the addition of sidewalks and approaching roadway shoulders, which are all scheduled to be completed prior to school reconvening in early September.

The project will increase safety for school children, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorized users crossing at the intersection.

Traffic control detours and signage will be coordinated with the return of this year’s Rotary Auction to lessen the impacts. After July 4 the entirety of NE New Brooklyn Road from Sportsman Club Road NE to NE Grizdale Lane will be closed in both directions. The contractor has been selected, and the project bid came in under budget.

Meanwhile, crews are also painting stripes on BI roads, including on fog lines, to improve safety.

Mowing delays

Mowing along Bainbridge road shoulders has been delayed due to staffing limitations; workers are sought.

Roadside mowing is done along 142 miles of BI over up to 900 hours, and no herbicides are used to control vegetation.

Recurring work also includes danger tree removal, sign repair, gravel road repair, and facilities maintenance. In spring, seasonal work includes streetscape maintenance, facility landscape maintenance, mowing, weeding and irrigation setup. Overhead trimming and shoulder pulling work involves multiple crew members.

Trail open house

A North Sound to Olympics Trail Open House will take place in Kingston June 21.

Kitsap County Public Works is doing a feasibility analysis for such a trail.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the presentation starting at 6:30 at the Village Green Community Center, 26159 Dulay Road NE.

If you want to attend virtually, go to kcowa.us/NSTOZoom.
