A Bainbridge Island police vehicle was damaged but no one was hurt in a bizarre accident in the parking lot of the Safeway on High School Road.

According to a Bainbridge Island police report released this week, two Bainbridge police units were involved in a traffic stop that culminated in the grocery store’s parking lot just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12.

One of the Bainbridge officers, driving a 2014 Ford Explorer, pulled into the parking lot and stopped his vehicle between two rows of parked cars in front of the Safeway.

Moments later, a 64-year-old Bainbridge man in a 2007 Subaru Outback that was parked next to the police vehicle began to pull out and then backed right into the police vehicle.

The officer sitting in the Ford Explorer said he saw the other driver begin to back up, but noted his flashing overhead lights were on and he thought for sure that the other driver had seen him. The officer also said he didn’t have time to warn the other driver before the Subaru struck his vehicle.

The other police officer, who was talking to the person who had been pulled over, heard the Subaru hit the police vehicle.

The Subaru driver told police said he did not know how he did not see the police vehicle before he hit it.

The investigation report on the incident also said the driver “was very apologetic.”

The Subaru had damage to the driver’s side front door and mirror, and the police vehicle sustained damage to the passenger side rear quarter panel and rear bumper. Neither vehicle was towed.

The Subaru driver was not charged, according to the police report.
