‘Scene Study’ for adults, teen actors comes to BPA

As part of the Winter 2016 Break Camps, “Scene Study,” an eight-session acting course taught by internationally renowned actor and director Wilson Milam, will begin at Bainbridge Performing Arts Monday, Jan. 23.

The course is for serious teenage and adult thespians and is limited to no more than 10 students.

Over the course of eight sessions, students will explore scenes that they provide. While breaking the pieces into beats, examining the use of language and drawing on the work of established masters to investigate the actions taken by each character, the students will discover how this type of analysis can be used to understand their desires, obstacles and the stakes of failure.

Milam began his career in Seattle working as an actor before moving to Chicago and getting work as an assistant director at the Victory Gardens, Remains, and Steppenwolf Theatre Companies. He directed the world premiere production of Tracy Lett’s “Killer Joe” at the Next Theatre, which subsequently moved to the Traverse Theatre for the Edinburgh Festival where it won a Fringe First Award before transferring to London.

A subsequent production of Lett’s next play, “Bug,” transferred to The Gate Theatre in London and Milam then began working on both sides of the Atlantic. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Director of a Play for Martin McDonagh’s “The Lieutenant of Inishmore,” as well as a Lucille Lortel nomination for his direction of “Killer Joe.”

The class will be held every Monday for eight weeks from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost of tuition is $320. Visit www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org/collections/winter-2017-classes/products/scene-study to learn more and complete the two-part registration process.
