Internationally touring indie folk jazz musician and composer Shelita Burke, a Seattle native now living in Paris, will bid farewell — for now — to the Pacific Northwest with a final local show at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art this week before leaving to return to Europe and begin preparation for her next tour.

Having only just recently returned from playing a mini tour throughout New York – where The Village Voice claimed “her live shows are a must see!” – Burke has been exploring new North American venues and developing plans for an upcoming tour of South America as well.

New York Times reviewer Brad Spurgeon described Burke as having “hard hitting rhythmic guitar playing and vocals that seem to be a cross between Tori Amos and Bjork.”

Previously a member of the group November Pearls, Burke’s worldwide touring itinerary has and will include stops in Reykjavik, Tokyo, Dublin, Marrakesh, London and Paris. She has headlined the “More than a Folk Festival,” was the headlining act at the “Chalk Art Festival” in Canada and she was specially invited this year to perform at the renowned Sundance Film Festival.

Joining Burke for her BIMA show are local musicians Jonny Cole on bass and percussionist Abraham Neuwelt. The concert is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28. Tickets, $25 in advance and $30 at the door, are available at www.shelitaburke.bpt.me. Burke specializes in a unique blending of folk jazz fusion stylings, a richly textured musical tradition which traces its roots to the evolving American rock scene of the 1950s and ‘60s, incorporating her unique lyrics from her own life experiences and her mix of Native American, African and European roots.

The show is appropriate for audiences of all ages.
