As a practicing trial attorney and former co-worker of Karen Klein, I write in support of her candidacy for Kitsap County Superior Court judge.

I have known Karen since the mid-1980s when we worked together, with others, in a poverty law office in Seattle each carrying a large caseload and often representing marginalized people in very  difficult situations. The job entailed legal analysis, negotiation and trial strategizing, but just as importantly, constant personal interaction with clients, colleagues, professional adversaries and court staff. Amidst these circumstances Karen was frequently able to obtain favorable results for her clients.

In the years since that time, I know that Karen has been involved in bar-related activities outside the courtroom and in community-based activities and has operated her own business, Silver Planet.

She has voluntarily mentored new attorneys, lobbied the Legislature for fairer laws, and served on various bar committees concerning women and minorities in the profession and judicial screening. She has also served as a district court judge protem.

Trial judges are the public faces of our justice system as they usually have the most direct contact with the community.  The good ones control the courtroom, fairly interpret and apply the law, treat all parties with respect, and by a mix of wit, diplomacy and humility exhibit a temperament that makes participants feel respected and heard.

Karen Klein would embody these attributes and make a fine addition to our local bench.
