The letter, “Crosswalks dangerous for many island seniors” in the Jan. 1, 2010 issue, prompted me to write about a concern I have had for some time.

First, let me state that I am 100 percent in support of the law that requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and I try very hard to be diligent about obeying the law.

But, that being said, I think that there is a problem here on Bainbridge Island. It seems that many pedestrians take an almost aggressive approach to crossing the street.

Rather than checking to be sure that the way is clear, or that a car has stopped, all too many people, both young and old, virtually lunge into the crosswalk without looking either way. And a friendly “thanks for stopping” gesture would be nice, too.

Pedestrians have some responsibility for their own safety, regardless of the law. They could wind up “dead right” in the matter.
