Bainbridge blotter | 18, 28 and DUI

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

Friday, May 15

10:03 p.m. An employee of the Bainbridge parks district reported an attempted assault with a vehicle at Fort Ward Park.

The caller told police someone in a red Chevrolet pickup truck tried to ram him after the suspected assailant was found trying to break into the park.

The park employee told police there had been problems in the past few weeks at the park with someone pulling up the bollard that blocks the road to the lower part of the park.

With the bollard removed, people have been driving to the lower park to party and have bonfires.

The man said he had locked the bollard earlier, and after a movie, decided to return to the park to make sure the bollard was still secured.

As the man arrived, he saw someone pulling on the bollard. When the man saw the park employee, he jumped into a truck and peeled out past the other man’s vehicle.

The parks employee said he was in fear and thought the truck was going to ram him. He said there was not room for a piece of paper to be placed between the vehicles as the truck passed by.

Police recognized the description of the man and the vehicle, partly due to a speeding ticket the driver had been given in November 2014.

Thursday, May 14

1:12 a.m. Police were called to a vehicle crash on Taylor Avenue NE. An officer found a vehicle in the ditch and an unresponsive man was in the driver’s seat.

The driver, a 22-year-old Bainbridge man, finally came to after police tapped on the vehicle window.

When asked what had happened, the man said nothing had happened and was apparently unaware he had been in an accident.

The driver failed field sobriety tests and when asked about his condition on a scale of 0 to 10 (with 10 being the most intoxicated), the man said he was “probably a 9 or 10.”

Breath tests had readings of  .220 and .211.

The man was taken to Kitsap County Jail and charged with DUI.
