The developers of Owen’s Playground have announced they are working toward the second phase of fundraising for a park intended to be used by children with disabilities.
The playground will be located in the island’s Rotary Park, where its founders hope to promote barrier-free play.
Since supporters launched the idea, the project raised $158,000 in 2014 for phase one.
Phase two will require $205,000, where $50,000 will go toward laying out smooth surfacing for both phases before June 30.
Smooth, safe and accessible surfaces throughout the playground will allow children who use mobility devices to fully experience the entire outdoor play area.
The playground is being built in honor of Owen Marshall, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 6 from complications associated with cerebral palsy. His memorial funds and private family funds were donated as the seed money to kick-start the playground in his memory.
Now, supporters of the playground are looking for volunteers to take on a variety of roles during the second phase of fundraising and outreach.
