Applicants line up before taking a firefighters' exam to qualify as a new hire for the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.

Officers with the Bainbridge Island Fire Department help process applicants for full-time positions with the department Saturday, June 6 at Sonoji Sakai Intermediate School.

More than 100 people applied for four positions in the department — with some of the new hires being added to help staff the Phelps Road station — and 82 hopefuls showed up this weekend to take a 100-question test to qualify for the next round of review.

Applicants came from all over Western Washington and several nearby states.

First in line was Scott Leaver, a volunteer firefighter with Bainbridge who was looking to join the career ranks.
