Kitsap Community Foundation has chosen Kitsap County’s annual philanthropy award recipients, and Bainbridge Island’s Diane Landry will receive the “Outstanding Citizen Award” for 2015.
The foundation recently announced its winners from the pool of public nominations received during its annual nominating process.
“These are individuals who have given a lot of themselves to our community,” said Harriette Bryant, chairwoman of the foundation’s board.
“I am delighted that we will honor these people and this business during the Kitsap County Celebration of Philanthropy on May 15. I hope the public will join us that night to help honor these well-deserved award recipients,” she added.
Landry is well-known on Bainbridge for her work on behalf of the island and the Earth.
“I am honored to receive this award on behalf of all the volunteers of Bainbridge Island Zero Waste, a five-year-old initiative of Sustainable Bainbridge, along with all those who make it a habit to divert discarded resources from the landfill through waste prevention, reuse, composting, and recycling,” Landry said.
“Considering the vast quantities of raw material, energy and water that go into the manufacturing and transport of products and growing food, as ‘Citizen of the Year’ for my work with BI Zero Waste, I encourage all residents to be mindful of how we consume and dispose of all that we use,” she said.
The award honors an individual who has a proven history of giving generously of his or her time to local nonprofit organizations that benefit our community. In short, the award honors an outstanding volunteer.
The foundation received a flood of letters supporting Landry for the award.
As the coordinator of Zero Waste, an initiative of the nonprofit organization Sustainable Bainbridge, she has helped to change the conscience of Bainbridge Island with her passion to reduce, reuse and recycle. The foundation said it was clear she inspires others to get involved in environmental sustainability and praised her dedication and hard work.
