Recycle plastic caps, bottles together | Letters | Nov. 19

If you’re a visitor to the island’s recycling center, you may have noticed a toter with plastic caps glued to it.
Zero Waste Bainbridge (an initiative of Sustainable Bainbridge) was collecting these tops as part of a national cap recycling program run by Aveda. In just under six months, folks brought in over 80 pounds worth, which eventually became new caps for Aveda products. Thanks for your participation.
The recycling business is an ever-changing one, however, and the new recycling guidelines from Bainbridge Disposal are to now leave caps on plastic bottles, so the cap collection program is no longer necessary.
Zero Waste continues to offer guidance and support for recycling and composting at island events. We also publish Road Map to Zero Waste on the Sustainable Bainbridge website.
Upcoming is a project to outfit downtown Winslow with permanent recycling containers. If you want to be involved in our efforts, please email fallschurchbiker@yahoo.com.
