Tumblers defeat Holy Names, continue new winning streak

Senior co-captain Anne Schwartz said there were some nerves as they did battle with Holy Names, West Seattle and Chief Sealth Tuesday night at Bainbridge High School.

But the Spartans overcame the jitters and got some solid performances from some of the younger tumblers as they came in first with 158.575 points.

“They (Holy Names) are a rival team so we were pumped but that made some girls nervous,” Schwartz said. “There were some falls.”

Cougars gymnast Katie Rock won the all-around competition with 35.30 points. She took first in the vault, bar and beam events, but was third in the floor exercise.

Schwartz tied for first on the floor with Javiera Sobarzo from Holy Names with a 9.1.

Schwartz said that facing off against a high quality qymnast like Rock was a mental hurdle, but depth was the key for the Spartans. Bainbridge gymnasts took the majority of the top six places at the meet.

“We jumped it (the hurdle),” she said. “Katie’s good but we have five Katies and they have one.”

Head coach Cindy Guy agreed.

“We know that Katie is good and she’s going to score 35 (points) or higher,” she said. “But with our depth we can out(score them). They have good gymnasts but they don’t have the depth that we have.”

Guy gave credit to sophomore Marielle Summers and junior Rachel Kaminer for their performance. Summers and Kaminer finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the all-around competition.

Sophomore Laura Hilst finished in a tie for sixth with Summers in the vault, while junior Grace Allen took fourth in the floor exercise. Senior co-captain Adrienne Palay tied with Schwartz for second in the vault and placed fifth on the beam.

“Marielle, Anne, Laura, Megan (Duncan) and Grace, they all had a great meet,” Guy said. “It’s a good solid group.”

Schwartz said they still want to reach the team goal of scoring 160 points for a meet, but they’ll work on their routines over winter break to reach that goal.

Bainbridge also won its season opener Dec. 10 by beating Nathan Hale, Shorewood, Shorecrest and Ingraham.

Kaminer, Palay, Schwartz and Summers finished in the top five in the all-around. Kaminer and Schwartz took the top two spots in the floor exercise with a 9.3 and a 9.1 respectively.

The Spartans host Sehome, Bellingham, Squalicum and Mercer Island at 6 p.m. Friday, then won’t compete until Jan. 7, when Holy Names, Nathan Hale and Ingraham return.

Anne Schwartz scored 7.75 on her beam routine Tuesday night during a meet between Bainbridge, Holy Names, Chief Sealth and West Seattle. Bainbridge won with 158.575 points.
