Despite temperatures exceeding 90 degrees, 31 teams of tennis players enjoyed the inaugural Bainbridge Community Tennis Association summer tournament on Aug. 20 at the Bainbridge High School courts.

The majority of players were from Bainbridge, but several players came from throughout the Olympic Peninsula and even Seattle for the sunny showdown.

The 8 a.m. start saw the 8.0 and 9.0 players take to the courts. The tournament concluded by 3:30 p.m., having completed 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 competitions.

Winners of the 9.0 draw were Steve and Keet Curtis; 8.0 winners were Linda Frazee and Dave Beam; 7.0 winners were Susan Bray and Jill Day and 6.0 winners were Erica Wiecher and Michelle Lesnik.

Prizes donated by local businesses were awarded to all first-place winners.

Following the tournament, players moved on to Wing Point Golf & Country Club for a barbecue buffet dinner. An exhibition match completed the full day of activities.

The exhibition players were the sole entrants in the 10.0 division, and included tennis professional and BCTA board member Ross Eaton and Todd Devries playing against Keet Curtis and Ben DeVries.

This event raised $725 for scholarships for aspiring junior players.
