Swimmers race to win over Holy Names

Spartans finish dual meet season with a 7-2 record

The Bainbridge girls’ swim team have taken care of business all season long.

They wrapped up a successful dual meet season with a 106-77 win over the Holy Names Cougars Tuesday at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center.

Head coach Greg Colby said the team is much improved from where they were at the same point last season.

“Mentally, physically, emotionally – team wise, we’re in a much better place,” he said.

Colby also said there are a few swimmers who still need qualifying times, but he’s confident that can happen.

“Having Kay (Sterner) get her 200 free (state) qualifying time was sort of the last piece of the puzzle we’re waiting on,” Colby said. “We still need to get Emily (Sonnenfeld) and Cameo (Hlebasko) qualified in the 100 back, but I think we’ve got a great lineup going into districts and state. I think the girls are confident.”

Senior co-captain Isabel Brofsky felt they stayed healthy as they could over the season.

“We haven’t seen the times drop quite as much as we’re tapering at different rates, but when we get to Metros and districts, we’re going to have some really good times because we’ve been tapering so well,” she said.

The team also paid tribute to five seniors – Sonnenfeld, Brofsky, Claire Knox, Eliana Victurine and Rachel Agamalian – swimming their last home meet of their prep career.

“It’s four years of hard work and all my girls that I love,” Knox said about her time on the team. “I’m going to miss all of them.”

Bainbridge’s only other loss this season was to rival Mercer Island, as the Islanders beat them 89-78 Oct. 19.

The Spartans also took second to them at the Mukilteo Invitational Oct. 2.

Geneva Levy won the 200 freestyle with an All-American time of 1:58.86.

Bainbridge also took first at the Southwest Washington Invitational with 472 points.

The Metro meet is 3 p.m. Friday at the Helen Madison Pool in Seattle.
