Feldtman throws two hitter as Spartans inch closer to state.
Things were not going well for the Bainbridge baseball team Monday.
Already in the midst of a three game losing streak that cost them a top seed in the Metro League tournament, Colin Feldtman, in his first start against Ingraham, had a ball go off his ankle for a base hit and walked the next batter.
The sophomore then proceeded to retire the next 21 batters he faced – just one over the minimum – in a complete game two hitter as the Spartans defeated the Rams 6-0 in a first round Metro League tournament game.
Feldtman struck out seven and also got two double plays in his favor. He threw 82 pitches.
“He was very efficient,” head coach Jayson Gore said. “He’s going to be a real good one.”
Bainbridge scored in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Kauika Peleti to score Colin Bowman.
In the third, Peleti drove in Bowman again with an RBI double, then again in the fifth with another RBI groundout.
The Spartans scored three more runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Peleti and Robbie Stevenson.
The stellar start by Feldtman saves Tal Glass for tomorrow’s game against Seattle Prep.
“We got what we wanted,” Gore said. “We wanted it
(a rematch) bad. We were disappointed with our effort (against Prep.)”
Bainbridge lost 6-1 at Prep April 30, then were blown out in the last game of the season 15-4 last Tuesday, as the team made several errors in bad weather.
The Spartans could be without Gary French for the remainder of their playoff run.
He hurt his knee against Bishop Blanchet and had a MRI yesterday.
Gore thinks he may need surgery.
Their game against Prep is at 7 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex at Chief Sealth in West Seattle.
Kickers get big tourney win
Even though the Bainbridge boys soccer team was controlling the game against West Seattle in a Metro League playoff game, they were down 1-0 at halftime.
“We had created an enormous number of chances,” head coach George Vukic said.
But the Spartans came back to defeat the Wildcats 2-1 at Interbay Stadium to move on in the tournament.
Leandre Fischer scored the tying goal on an assist from Kyle Scoble in the 50th minute, then eight minutes later, Zach Connor scored the winning goal on an assist from Max Aussendorf.
“It was very hot,” Vukic said. “The hot Field Turf made for an unsual game, but we played really well.”
Up next is Mountain Division leader Eastside Catholic today at Interbay at 3:30 p.m.
Vukic feels they’ll be ready.
“I think we learned a lot when we played them,” he said. “We’re in the position of being the underdog who has some ideas on how to beat them.”
Sailors win another title
The Bainbridge High Sailing Team won its second 2007 Northwest district title this past weekend at the Team Racing Championship held at Orcas Island.
Both varsity and junior varsity were successful in the team races, winning their divisions with 12-2 and 8-2 win-loss records respectively.
Six area schools elected to compete in the regatta: Anacortes, Orcas, North Kitsap, Friday Harbor, Central Kitsap, and Friday Harbor. Orcas finished in second place.
It is the fifth consecutive year that Bainbridge has qualified for a national championship regatta.
The race committee ran 45 races on Saturday under bright skies and in moderately windy conditions, which allowed for three complete rotations in the varsity division and two and a half in the JV division, a very long day of sailing.
Sunday’s racing had a slower start as the wind delayed its arrival, but it filled eventually, and another 15 races were run, completing a fourth rotation for varsity, and several more JV races.
There were some dynamic team racing moves executed by the Bainbridge team, including some in the JV division. All of the race courses were in the shape of a digital N, with lots of marks and opportunities for mark traps, for exciting racing.
The Bainbridge team had trained thoroughly on last leg tactics and was able to use this knowledge and great boat handling to recover from potential losing situations and take the win.
Team captains Glen Stellmacher and Amy Allen, sailing as skipper and crew for the regatta, worked tirelessly to call plays, set traps, and sail maneuvers that passed their teammates forward into winning combinations.
Stellmacher received a special award recognizing his contributions and his dedication to the improvement of his team. The victorious sailors for varsity included Stellmacher, Allen, Emma Hartmann, Haley Lane, Max Fleischfresser, Maddie Jackson, and Sarah Clarke.
Team member Evan Stewart was unable to attend the regatta due to a prior commitment.
The Bainbridge JV sailed extremely well, with all of the skippers sailing in their first efforts at team racing against the other schools. Strong last leg work was evident in this division as well.
Several schools, lacking enough sailors to make up complete JV teams, combined forces to bring up their numbers, and in doing so, strengthened their pool of skippers, but they were no match for these new Bainbridge team racers.
Nico Papajani, Andrew Selzler, Kyle Grosten, Sean Willerford, Annie Lukins, and Lukas Woltjer, having no subs, enthusiastically sailed every Bainbridge JV race.
The varsity win qualifies Bainbridge to send a delegation of up to eight team members to the National High School Team Racing Championship in New Orleans.
