Grapplers place second at Metro tournament

The Bainbridge wrestling team performed well as they took second place at the Metro tournament over the weekend at Chief Sealth High School with 148 points.

They beat out Ingraham by a single point. It is the highest finish for the Spartans at the tournament in several years.

Corey Touchette was the lone Spartan wrestler to win a title as he dominated his competition in the 160-pound bracket. The senior co-captain pinned Franklin’s Alexandrew Wong in just 24 seconds, then scored a 9-0 major decision over O’Dea’s Micah Englehart before outlasting Bishop Blanchet’s Spencer Sherman in a 2-0 decision.

Karl Hunt took third in the 189-pound bracket. He lost to West Seattle’s Zach Broten in the quarterfinals but rebounded to pin Nicco Fortes of O’Dea and defeat Nikko Emm of West Seattle by major decision.

Alex Hoover took third in the 140-pound bracket. He was sent to the consolation bracket early, but rebounded with two pins in under a minute and a 11-5 decision over Eastside Catholic’s Drew Beggs for third.

Dylan Read took third in the 119-pound bracket. The freshman rebounded from a loss to the eventual champion in O’Dea’s Zach Hamilton to beat Rainier Beach’s Kazuhiro Hara and Chief Sealth’s Larry Mao by pinfall for the bronze.

Alec Greiwe was fourth in the 140-pound bracket. He made it to the quarterfinals before being sent to the consolation bracket by the eventual champion in O’Dea’s Gage Anderson. Greiwe won his next match by pinfall, but lost a close 6-4 decision to Chief Sealth’s Nahi Kedir in the third/fourth place match.

The top five make it to districts.

Several other Spartan wrestlers placed in the top eight.

Calvin Gurtler took seventh in the 125-pound bracket while Bryce MacDonald was seventh in the 130-pound weight bracket.

Ryan Henesy placed seventh in the 135-pound bracket while Keenan Barrow was eighth in the 140-pound bracket.

Henry Wienkers took seventh in the 145-pound bracket with a pin over Ingraham’s Patrick Westgaard in 47 seconds.

Weber Coryell was sixth in the 152-pound bracket with Bill Hepworth placing seventh.

Connor Kenyon was seventh in the 171-pound bracket while Mitchell Coryell was eighth.

Mike Grant was sixth in the 215-pound bracket.

The Spartans head to Kennedy High School Saturday along with teams from the Seamount League for the Region 2 tournament.

Swimmers send several to district tournament

The Bainbridge boys swim team had a fine showing at the Metro tournament at Madison Pool in Seattle over the weekend, placing fourth with 192 points.

Andrew McCarthy won a league title in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:38.72 – just .01 off his time from last year’s win at state in the same event. He finished second to Lakeside’s Zach Wagner in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.11.

Colin Chupik won a league title in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.85. He took third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.41.

Todd McCarthy took second in the 100 backstroke to Lakeside’s Kevin Yu with a time of 56.06 and third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.23.

Spencer Alpaugh took fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.85 and fourth in the 500 free with a time of 4:51.47.

Jared Bell was fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.12.

Alex Nowjack won the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.28 while Quinn Cullen was fifth with a time of 1:04.70.

The 400 freestyle relay team took second to Lakeside with a time of 3:18.74 – just under a second from first place – while the 200 medley relay team took fourth with a time of 1:43.35 – just over a second and a half away from first place.

The 200 medley relay team took sixth.

Bainbridge heads to the 3A Sea-King District 2 meet Friday and Saturday at Mary Wayte Pool in Mercer Island.

Girls hoopsters move on, boys sent home

The Bainbridge girls’ basketball team defeated West Seattle 61-36 Friday to wrap up its regular season with a seven game winning streak, but lost to top-ranked Holy Names 65-20 Tuesday in the Metro tournament.

Against the Cougars, the Spartans were down by 10 after the first quarter, but Holy Names outscored them 21-2 in the second to effectively end the game.

Wesley Nottingham led Bainbridge with six points while Grace Kenyon had seven rebounds.

Against West Seattle, the Spartans held the Wildcats to five points in the second quarter for a lead they would not relinquish.

Hannah Depew had a double-double with 19 points (leading all scorers) and 10 assists. She also had six steals and five rebounds.

Sydney Severson had 13 points while Morgan Moniz and Nottingham each scored eight points.

Bainbridge traveled to Lakeside Thursday to face the Lions, but results were not available as of press time.

If they won, they take the third seed to the 3A Sea-King District tournament. Bainbridge then plays at 3 p.m. Feb. 15 at Chief Sealth against Nathan Hale, Bishop Blanchet, Mt. Si or Liberty depending on who takes what seed in their respective tournaments.

If they lost, they take the fourth seed and host either Mercer Island or Juanita Saturday.

The boys’ basketball team saw its season end on a seven-game losing streak. The Spartans lost to Eastside Catholic 63-56 Thursday and to West Seattle 63-47 Friday.

Against the Crusaders, Chris Bell led all scorers with 23 points while Rico Failla added 19.

Against the Wildcats, Failla led all scorers with 26 points while Tucker Gilles added 10.

Bainbridge finished with a record of 4-16.

BIGC takes home some medals from San Diego

The Bainbridge Island Gymnastics Club had several gymnasts who placed in the top ten at the San Diego Team Cup/San Diego Classic last weekend.

For the boys, Elite Level gymnast Tim Forro was first in the floor and vault while Level 9 gymnast Nathaniel Opalski took second on the parallel bars event. Level 6 gymnast Cole Lewis was fifth on the parallel bars while Ian Mathews was ninth on the parallel bars.

For the girls, Level 8 gymnast Chloe Seferos finished in 11th place in the all-around for the 10-12-year-old age bracket.

Level 7 gymnast Vicky Camp took 12th place in the all-around for the 13-year-old age bracket while Marielle Summers finished in fourth place in the all-around for the 14-year-old and up age bracket.

Level 5 gymnast Morgan Dierickx was eighth in the all-around in the 10-11-year-old age bracket while Remi Rosencrans was sixth in the all-around in the 7-9-year-old age bracket. Mia Bruzzo placed ninth in the all-around while Mariko Ronan was 10th and Kati Cooper took 11th in the all-around in the same age bracket.
