SILVERDALE – It has been a frustrating start for the Bainbridge boys basketball team.

Injuries and poor play have led to a 2-6 start and a search for answers to turn the season around.

After the 66-55 non-league loss Monday at Central Kitsap, the team stayed in the locker room for 25 minutes after the game to discuss what went wrong and what they need to change.

“We just have some things we have to work out,” head coach Steve Henderson said. “There’s a combination of things. It’s a team thing and we have to work on it.”

It wasn’t a good start against the Cougars as CK got out to a 19-3 start. They pressured the Spartans from the beginning, forcing turnovers and converting them into points.

Bainbridge got back into the game in the second quarter as Chris Bell scored 11 points and Eric Raustein and Rico Failla each scored four to cut the lead down to single digits at halftime.

The Cougars kept the lead in double digits for most of the third quarter, but back-to-back threes by Failla late in the third sparked a 17-4 run that drew the Spartans within four at the 4:19 mark in the fourth quarter.

But Josh Sontag and Steffan Collins combined for 12 points to close the game out. Bainbridge had trouble finishing at the rim and also committed a couple of costly turnovers.

Henderson said they have three players – all “potential starters” – out with injuries.

Senior guard Carson Zajonic could be out for the season with a broken wrist while Tucker Gilles and Michael Crowley are hampered by nagging ankle injuries. Henderson hopes to get Gilles and Crowley back after the break.

Bainbridge will get back to practice Dec. 27 to prepare for its game Dec. 30 at arch rival North Kitsap.

Bell finished with 31 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Failla had 10 points. Adam Pool and Raustein each had six points and five rebounds.

On Friday against Coeur d’Alene, the Spartans lost 58-57 in the last few seconds of the game after taking the lead with a minute left.

Bell had 28 points and six rebounds while Failla had 16 points, five rebounds and four steals.

On Thursday against Nathan Hale, the Spartans beat the Raiders 53-44 despite shooting 29 percent for the game.

Bell had 19 points and nine rebounds while Raustein had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Failla scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

On Tuesday against Seattle Prep, the Spartans allowed a season high 82 points in their defeat to the Panthers.

Bell scored 21 points while Failla added 17.

Girls Basketball

The Bainbridge girls’ basketball team is going into the break with a 4-3 record by winning two of its last three games.

On Monday against Lincoln, the Spartans came back from a double digit deficit to beat the Abes 52-45 in a non-league game. Bainbridge outscored Lincoln 39-19 in the second half.

Davi Gonzales and Grace Kenyon each had 15 points while Ariel Fountain had nine and Morgan Moniz added eight.

Kenyon grabbed 18 rebounds while Hannah Depew dished out nine assists.

On Thursday against Nathan Hale, the Spartans let a 14-7 lead slip away as they lost 54-52.

Gonzales led the Spartans with 15 points and eight rebounds while Kenyon had 11 points and eight rebounds and three assists.

Hannah Depew had six points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists.

On Tuesday against Seattle Prep, the Spartans played the Panthers close, but lost 51-44.

Gonzales had 16 while Kenyon scored 10.

Bainbridge travels to Kent-Meridian Dec. 29.

Boys Swimming

The Bainbridge boys’ swim team collected two big dual meet wins on Dec. 15 with a 92-78 win over Bellevue and Dec. 17 with a 96-87 win over O’Dea.

Against Bellevue, the 200 medley relay team of Todd McCarthy, Spencer Alpaugh, Andrew McCarthy and Colin Chupik had a state qualifying time of 1:44.84. The foursome also had a state qualifying time of 3:24.62 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Todd McCarthy had state times of 1:49.16 in the 200 freestyle and 4:53.97 in the 500 freestyle while Andrew McCarthy had a state time of 2:00.46 in the 200 individual medley. Colin Chupik had state times of 22.72 in the 50 freestyle and 50.20 in the 100 freestyle.

Wrestling

The Bainbridge wrestling team defeated Lakeside 60-12 Wednesday.

Calvin Gurtler pinned Lakeside’s Sam Duniete in 28 seconds while Henry Wienkers, Weber Coryell and Karl Hunt also won by pinfall.

Bainbridge also took ninth with 57 points at the Centralia Christmas Classic Saturday.

Karl Hunt won a title in the 189-pound category with a 7-5 decision over Centralia’s Dayna Squibb.

Corey Touchette took second in the 160-pound category while Alec Greiwe took second in the 130-pound category.

Football

Alec Grimm was selected as an honorable mention at offensive line in the 3A classification for the 2010 Associated Press all-state football team.

Grimm, a senior co-captain, also was a All-Metro Mountain Division selection and a All-KNG first team selection for his play this season.

Three other Kitsap County players – Bremerton’s Kyle Kennedy and Kingston’s Lou Hecker and Freddy Rodolf – were selected as honorable mentions for the 2A classification.

Youth Soccer

The Bainbridge Island Youth Soccer Club is asking for donations through the One Call For All campaign to help pay off the $200,000 cost for the two artificial turf fields at Battle Point Park.
