Powerhouse performances in three relay races — and a first-place win in the 100-yard breaststroke — sparked the Spartans to the Metro League championship last weekend in boys swimming and diving.

Bainbridge High won the Metro title with 802 points, easily edging the Lakeside Lions, who came in second with 525.5.

Bainbridge started the meet at Snohomish with a win in the 200-yard medley relay.

The fantastic foursome of Sam Alpaugh, Kevin Houseman, Makai Ingalls and Aidan Wagner placed first with a time of 1:37.34 — a nearly 2-second improvement over their preliminary time of 1:39.39.

The Spartans also took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Wagner and Ingalls joined with Parker Bushey and Garrett Waite to win the race in 1:28.54. They had a preliminary race time of 1:29.64.

The BHS 400-yard freestyle relay team also swam to the Metro title in the event.

Bushey and Waite, joined by Jem Bullock and Henry Bacon on the middle two legs, claimed first place in 3:17.81, a big improvement over their prelim time of 3:22.01.

Kevin Houseman won the 100-yard breaststroke for the Spartans, and finished first in 58.16.

Bainbridge claimed the crown in large part with the help of its fab freshmen. Houseman, Ingalls, Wagner, Waite and Sam Chapman.

Other outstanding Spartan performances at the Metro meet included a second-place finish by Ingalls in the 100-yard butterfly (51.65) and second place in diving by Gabe Emert (finals score of 327.30).

Bainbridge also nabbed second, third and fourth place in the 500-yard freestyle (Alpaugh, 4:56.21; Bullock, 4:58.28; and Chapman, 5:04.80).

Waite nearly came in first in the 100-yard backstroke, but finished second in 54.25.

Alpaugh rocketed to third place in the 100 backstroke. He finished in 54.70, nearly three seconds faster than his prelim time of 57.50.

In the 200-yard freestyle, the Spartans had two swimmers advance place in the race’s top eight.

Bullock swam to fifth place with a time of 1:48.84, while teammate Bacon was just behind, with a time of 1:53.10.

A trio of Bainbridge swimmers also placed in the 50-yard freestyle.

Waite was fourth (22.68), Andy Yalung was seventh (22.88) and Wagner finished in eighth (22.89).

The race was tight as a tick: just 1.18 seconds separated the first- and eighth-place finishers.
