Spartans win first match in tourney

The Bainbridge Spartans swatted the Seahawks of Chief Sealth in girls varsity volleyball in the first match of the Metro League Tournament at Garfield High, but fell behind in the following three contests against Lakeside, Eastside Catholic and Blanchet.

SEATTLE – The Bainbridge Spartans swatted the Seahawks of Chief Sealth in girls varsity volleyball in the first match of the Metro League Tournament at Garfield High, but fell behind in the following three contests against Lakeside, Eastside Catholic and Blanchet.

Against Chief Sealth, Bainbridge shook off a close two sets before putting the Seahawks away. The Spartans won 25-23, 25-21, 26-16.

In the second match, Lakeside quickly dispatched BHS 25-18, 25-14, 25-7.

Bainbridge battled back in the third match and took Eastside Catholic to a grueling fourth set before the Crusaders finally prevailed, 25-22, 22-25, 25-11, 26-24.

In the final and fourth match against Blanchet, the Braves came back from a first set loss to win, 15-21, 25-22, 25-9.

The Spartans advanced to the district tournament and were scheduled to play Ballard Thursday at Juanita High School in Kirkland in a loser-out game. With a victory, the team was expecting to face Mercer Island.11:51:15
