Spartans suffer 2-1 loss to Roosevelt in boys soccer

BAINBRIDGE – In what was technically their first loss of the year (after an earlier defeat by Ballard was later overturned), the Bainbridge High varsity boys soccer team were bested 2-1 by the visitors from Roosevelt Tuesday night.

“You never like to lose,” said BHS Head Coach Ian McCallum. “But it was a tight game, both teams had good chances.”

The scale-tilting goal that beat Bainbridge was a surprise, the coach said. To both teams, it would seem.

“It came off the defender’s head, hit the post, and then I think it bounced off the goalkeeper, I don’t know,” he said.

The defeat left the Spartans with an overall season record of 4-1-2, and ranked in the fifth spot in the Metro standings. O’Dea remains the top dog around with a flawless 7-0 overall record, Ballard number two (5-0), Garfield third (3-0-2) and Franklin and Roosevelt tied for fourth place (each boasting 3-1 in conference).

A recent change in the team’s formation had assisted with the simplification the Spartans needed, McCallum said, though the difficulties were far from over with.

“We got some injuries now, though, that’s the thing,” he said. “We got two guys who probably won’t play on Friday from injury, another three guys who are on vacation for Spring Break, [so] guys will get plenty of playing time Friday against Lakeside.”

The Spartans will play Lakeside at 4:15 p.m. Friday, March 31 before Spring Break officially begins, postponing games. They will then return to battle O’Dea’s ferocious Fighting Irish at home at 6 p.m. Monday, April 10.
