Spartans snag speedy success in Marysville

Nearly 100 Bainbridge High School cross country runners (almost the whole team) joined more than 40 other schools last week at the Nike Twilight Invitational 5K at the Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville. Dozens of Spartans set personal records (PRs) despite soggy conditions.

MARYSVILLE – Nearly 100 Bainbridge High School cross country runners (almost the whole team) joined more than 40 other schools last week at the Nike Twilight Invitational 5K at the Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville. Dozens of Spartans set personal records (PRs) despite soggy conditions.

In heavy rain and the dark of the 7 p.m. start time, the women’s varsity squad finished 12th of 36 3A and 4A teams. BHS was again led by newcomer Anna Scott (20:13) and sophomore Natalie Taylor (20:21, PR).

Audrey Weaver (20:27), Adalynn Griesser (20:35, PR), and Naomi von Ruden (20:42) completed the scoring, backed up by Jackie McVay (21:02) and freshman Emma Brundige (21:31).

The junior/senior JV women took seventh place in a field of 17 teams, with five of them setting personal records: veterans Lydia Goss (22:00) and Iris Dahl (23:27), and novices Ellen York (23:05), Emma Sellers (24:22) and Maria Flynn (25:13). Most notable was Dahl, a junior, who ran almost three whole minutes faster than her best sophomore time.

The women’s freshmen/sophomore JV team finished 12th of 28, as all seven novice runners set PRs, including Kari Perry (22:23), Josie Meier (22:40), Eva Entress (23:02), Eleanor Collins (23:09), Liz Messinger (24:04), Greta Carsten (24:17) and Emily Glenn (24:36).

Four Bainbridge women set PRs in the open 5K as well, including Karena Klinkenberg (25:43), Katie Hansen (26:49), Tayler Westby (27:20) and junior Acacia Fowler (27:41) — who broke her previous record by a full minute.

Sophomore Sebastian Belkin (16:38) led the men’s varsity team to a 13th-place finish in a field of 34, followed by classmates Carlo Ruggiero (16:50) and Carter Hall (17:00, a PR by 22 seconds).

Seniors Jacob Carlson (17:10, PR) and Cole Brundige (17:25) completed the scoring, with two more sophomores just behind them, both setting personal records: Sean Lindsey (17:28) and Elliott Windrope (17:29).

Kyle Hammer (18:18, PR) led the men’s junior/senior JV team to eighth place among 29 teams, followed by Matthew Carlson (18:20, a PR by 53 seconds), Jason Weiss (18:28, PR), Ben Cibula (18:55, PR), Dmitry Chandler (19:03), Jacob Tomer (19:06, PR) and senior Wyatt Longley (19:19).

The men’s freshman/sophomore JV team was 13th of 36 teams, as Nathan McVay (18:04) finished ahead of fellow sophomore Sawyer Blair (18:40, PR), Evan Kimmerlein (19:01, PR), Noah Faust (19:41), Reuben Allen (19:45, PR) and Andrew Westphal (19:59, PR).

In the open race, coach Dustin Haydock (17:52) was fourth of nearly 600 runners, after pacing senior Conrad Weiss (18:50) for the first mile. Sixteen others raced to PRs, including senior team captain Keaton Blair (19:10), Sean Williams (19:54), Casey Langsjoen (20:10), Banning Jones (20:37), Patrick Ledoux (20:39), Joshua Lewis-Sandy (20:41), Micah Glasby (20:59), Jeremy Lipschutz (21:23), Killian Krantz (21:20), Garrett Peterson (21:31), Niklas Prun (21:45), Steven Albergine (22:44), Adam McKinnon (23:30), Martin Vroom (23:31), Conor Babcock-O’Neill (23:57) and Thomas Eckhardt (27:02).
